Working my way through the second set of the subtitled Super Dimensional Fortress Macross DVDs, is very clear to me now that Macross and Robotech are as much the same as they are different. Most of the major plot-points in SDF Macross are the exactly as the were in the English Robotech version. But the language, delivery and style of Macross is very different than it was in Robotech.
And that is not necessarily a bad thing, most of the time the original source is better than the English adaptation. But, I'll admit, there are times where I actually prefer the American Robotech interpretation - so you can take away my Anime Purist card right now.
But I digress, I'll write another comparison of the two shows another time.
As we get back to the Macross, Misa, Hikaru, and the others give their report of their captivity with the aliens. It is met with mixed regard. Most of the officers dismiss their estimation of the sheer size and scope of the Zentradi force, while Captain Global clearly believes the report not only warrants consideration, but should be given in person to the UN Forces Headquarters. Global decides to make a break for the Earth.
Meanwhile, their interest further peaked in the lives of the micronians, the Zentradi send a team of micronized spies to the battle-fortress on a recon mission. The spies find that life among the humans is more rewarding than they ever thought possible. A life without constant war is amazing, and culture itself is wonderful in all of its facets: music, art, food, interacting with females, everything. When they return, their report shakes the Zentradi to their very core.
Unfortunately for the crew of the Macross, Global's report is not received well. The refugees are ordered to stay on-board the ship as they were all declared dead a year earlier. Minmay is the only one who manages to slip off the ship with Hikaru. In a visit to her parents, she reunites with her lost cousin Kaifun, who decides to go back to the Macross with them to spend time with his family.
Kaifun and Hikaru do not see eye to eye.
Slowly, it seems, Minmay is slipping away from Hikaru. Her career is taking off and he is being left behind. Worse, the deaths of many of his closest comrades and countless civilians continues to take its toll on Hikaru. He and Misa slowly become friends, but before anything more can come of it, she is sent on a mission of her own.
As the ship is forced back into space by the UN Forces command, continuing on a deadly game of cat and mouse with the enemy. The crew of the Macross wonders if they will every survive this brutal war.
And so it goes. The heavy themes continue on, and the Macross runs full steam ahead. I am continuing to enjoy Super Dimensional Fortress Macross in its original form, and the picture here is more clear than in the Robotech version due to the fact that it has less compression.
I can't wait to finish it off.
