Last night while watching Ah! My Goddess, I realized that I am right back where I started in my early days of Anime video collecting a dozen or so years ago. In the last few days I have watched AH! My Goddess and Super Dimensional Fortress Macross (Macross Saga to you Robotech heads) ... and those are the two titles I am "waiting" for new releases on at the moment.

Everything that's old is new again?

Well not quite. This Ah! My Goddess came out in 2005, and the dub is brand spanking new on Macross ... so there is some value to all this for sure. It's just funny how tastes change and evolve, but there is always "comfort food" shows to come home to ... I guess that's where I am right now.

Speaking of new and Robotech, there is a new trailer for Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles. It's looking better and better, I for one am interested on how an "American" anime will stand up to the current batch of releases.

You may have noticed more posts in the last few weeks. I'm back, working on a ton of projects, but will try and keep this site rolling along better.

It's really hard to not make snap judgements about a new dub for a show that's been around for 20 years. Maybe I'm getting picker about my dubs in my old age, or maybe its all the history I have with this title, but so far I'm .... skeptical of the new Macross dub.

Don't get me wrong, it's high quality work. This dub is still a quantum leap from the dub of old. It really has to be a challenge for ADV to recast roles that are hard set in the minds of many Otaku, and I think they hit many of the VAs right on the money. Most of the bridge crew and even Roy is a good fit... but the two leads...

I loved Vic Mignogna as Kurz Webber in Full Metal Panic, I'm just not sure how he fits as Hikaru Ichijo. That might just be a result of my memories of the Robotech version ... but the voice seems out of sync with the character, I keep thinking of a tall blonde dude ala Kurz (which he is IRL incidentally). I'm really not sure about Misa, one minute I think Monica Rial fits perfectly, the next she says something too shrilly and I'm jarred to reality.

Now granted, I just watched one episode and I usually give a show more time before passing judgment. I just did not have that kind of time last night. In a show of 36 episodes they have a lot of room to grow. As we know from history, this show has a lot of character development... they will get that chance. I also have yet to hear Mari Iijima at length, Minmay only has 2 lines in the first episode. I'm waiting for that as well.

The 5.1 mix is pretty wild for such an old show ... though I think there may be too much echo on the bridge of the Macross. Although it is more realistic, it's distracting.

I'll listen to a few more episodes and then will pass a non-snap judgement. At that point I'll decide if this will become my definitive set or if I'll stick to my AnimEgo version.

Another possible deal for Neon Genesis Evangelion Platinum Collection (2000), this time at Amazon or through our store (click the link).

I'm in for 2 myself. There is a good chance this will be canceled by the powers that be, but Amazon does not charge till after they ship so its worth a shot.

We are still here, I am writing and expect some new posts soon.

Was canceled anyway. Ah well, was worth the shot.

No, the site is not dead. Not yet at least.

Holiday recovery seems to have taken longer this year than most. I did finally manage to start watching some animation the last few days. Getting through all the Harry Potter flicks over the break took up a good bit of time.

So what am I watching now?

I watched last weeks episode of Naruto... very disappointing. It was the most butchered one so far. Kakashi and Zabuza continue their fight, and Zabuza's minion dies a horrible death ... not a bad edit there. But then Zabuza loses the use of his arms and they cut out how it happens. In other words, the stab wounds are there but the action is gone. As the series progresses, they are going to have a harder time resolving these types of issues.

I watched some of the original Ah! My Goddess OVA to psych myself up for the new TV show. DVD 1 is at my house and DVD 2 is on the way. I really wish we could get a full remaster of the OVA. It still looks good, but the transfer shows its age. The subtitle style is so clunky it makes it hard to read. I sometimes forget how long things have come in the last few years with DVD authoring. Still, its a great show and I still laugh at all the same places. Can't wait for the new one.

Oh, the first of the new Macross Dub DVD's released this past week. Worth a look for sure.

I'll be posting when I can, will ramp up some over the coming weeks.
