In a continuing effort to remake everything from my childhood, it looks like Voltron: Defender of the Universe is next on the list. Producer Mark Gordon ("The Day After Tomorrow") is looking to turn this 80's anime into a big budget blockbuster. It will be distributed by New Line Cinema.

With the right CGI, this could be pretty good... or it could really really suck, I don't see a lot of middle ground here.

Here is the full Yahoo/Reuters story.

Also, it appears a full new animated series is in the works and slated for fall release.

Thanks amorano for the scoop!

Part of this review was published previously last week, but I thought the three-part finale deserved a little more fleshing out.

The End, Part 1 continues the story set forth in the episode Birthmark. The dark heroine Raven a dark secret she has kept from her friends, and a dark destiny to fulfill. She is the catalyst to bring about the end of the world. Her father, the dark demon Trigon, sired her for one purpose only: to be the portal for him to enter the mortal plane and take over the universe.

When Raven realizes the day for the end has come, she breaks out of her moody, goth-girl mold and tries and bring happiness to her friends on their last day on the planet. It's interesting to see her change for the love of her friends, and do her best to insulate them from the inevitable. It doesn't last long however. Once they realize that the day for the End has come, they reveal a plan to keep her safe and show Raven to a safehouse within Titans Tower.

Trigon, however, has other ideas. He sends the reborn Slade and an army of fiery minions to descend on the Teen Titans and capture Raven. Slade and the army threaten to overrun the Titans, and Raven is forced to give herself up to save her friends. Her friends, down but not out, follow her down the crypt and try to stop the process. Despite their best efforts, Raven is sacrificed and Trigon enters the world.

The End Part 2 continues the story. The remaining Titans awake to a dead world. Raven saved them with a blessing before Trigon arrived, but now there is little hope to save the planet. The Titans attempt a frontal assault on Trigon, but it proves useless. The team is almost without hope.

And then it comes from an unlikely place, Slade. The Titans former archenemy arrives and offers them a chance. They may yet be able to save Raven. As for what is in it for him ... his reasons are his own. With little choice but to accept, Robin follows him down into the Abyss, leaving Starfire, Beast Boy, and Cyborg to distract Trigon in any way they can.

Robin and Slade battle their way down into hell, as the others find themselves facing the evil within. Secrets are revealed in the underworld, including how Slade survived his battle with Tara, why he worked fro Trigon, and where Robin might find Raven. The episode ends with more questions than answers.

Part 3 of The End does not disappoint. Still fighting their evil counterparts, Starfire, Beast Boy, and Cyborg struggle in a losing battle against Trigon. Robin finds a young Raven clad in white who remembers nothing but her name. Slade battles the a guardian of the underworld in an attempt to regain his flesh. All are victorious in these single battles. All dig very deep in the face of despair against the demon lord. All meet up on the surface for a final confrontation against Trigon.

One saves the world.

Her friends behind her, and cleansed of the evil in herself, White Raven rediscovers her self and power. Once and for all she is able to stand up to her father, overwhelming him in a climatic battle. The Titans prevail, the world is saved ... and Slade lives once again!

The End was a powerful end to Season 4. There was a good deal of characterization in these episodes, and we got to see Robin and Raven dig really deep in the face of despair to claim victory against Trigon. White Raven's one-on-one fight against Trigon was the highlight of the show. I really liked White Raven's character model, her all white costume and long flowing hair heightened the climatic mood. Too bad it is a one-shot deal for this series.

There are hints of romance between Robin and Raven, even more than we have seen between him and Starfire in a while. I wonder if they are going to play this up at all in Season 5 or if it will end with the season. That has yet to be determined I suppose.

I'm sorry to see the season come to an end, but I'm really happy with how it drew to a close. Slade's return alone could make Season 5 a blast. Hopefully it won't be too long before it starts up again. Till then, there are always reruns and DVDs.

Check it out, Optimus and Company are coming to a big-screen near you ... and Spielberg is involved in the action. This could be cool .... would be nice to make up for the movie and all the shows since Gen 1, which, IMO were the best of the lot.

Started DVRing Transformers: Cybertron this past week. Expect thoughts soon.

--------------------------------
From Hasbro.com.

The live-action “Transformers” movie has been set to open nationwide on 07-04-07, it was jointly announced today by DreamWorks Pictures, Hasbro, Inc.
(NYSE: HAS), and Paramount Pictures.

The feature, based on the globally popular Transformers franchise, will be directed by Michael Bay (upcoming “The Island,” “Armageddon”) from a screenplay being written by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (upcoming “The Island”). Tom DeSanto (“X-Men” and “X2: X-Men United”), Don Murphy (“The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”) and Lorenzo di Bonaventura (upcoming “Four Brothers”) are producing the film, with Steven Spielberg (“War of the Worlds”) and Hasbro’s Brian Goldner executive producing, and Ian Bryce serving as line producer.

In making the announcement, DreamWorks head of distribution Jim Tharp stated, “Under the direction of Michael Bay, and with Steven Spielberg executive producing, we know that ‘Transformers’ is going to be the kind of explosive action movie that is perfect for the height of the summer movie season. By staking our claim on the 4th of July, 2007, we ensure that we not only have the time to make this movie the way it should be made, but also to build excitement and awareness leading up to its release.”

Whoops, I almost forgot our birthday!

One year ago this week, Animation Unlimited came into existence. Our first post is dated July 11, 2004, and our domain was registered a week before. Looking back on the last year, I can say we have gone through some modest growth and a ton of changes.

When we first started out, A/U was just a mix of static pages. Content was slow in coming, mostly because it was a real pain in the ass to make changes. I got the forum up and running, but without any traffic it just sat there. I did a few site redesigns, did not like any of them, and finally decided that it was time to switch to a true Blog. In November, we switched over to NucleusCMS, retrofitting the posts that meant anything. It was the best move we could have made.

VHex gave us some light reviews to get things started (where you been man?), and I kept plugging on the design. Updates started flowing more easily as I started knocking the rust off my writing skills. In January we did a full site redesign with the present skin you see today. We officially launched in February this year after much tweaking. The search engines found us, and our traffic doubled, tripled and quadrupled. People started posting in the forum, using our affiliates, and the fun began.

And here we are. I probably have not dedicated as much time as I would have liked to the site, but for a hobby I can say I'm pretty pleased with the past year. We have ~20 hard reviews posted, 3 major features, and a lot of news posts. I don't think I can ever get the kind of traffic as an AnimeOnDVD or similar site, but it's not really my goal. I'm here to have fun and opine as I can on the hobby I love.

So, what's next for Year 2? More reviews for one, and hopefully a branching out from our Anime-centric ways. More features for another, expect some how-to articles on Animation Cel buying and Mounting. The Shop@ Animation Unlimited will expand a bit more ... we also have a storefront at CafePress, so look for T-shirts and other merchandising soon. And, this is just the beginning.

Thanks to everyone for your support throughout the year. Here's looking forward to Year 2!

My major Win2k3 migration project is over, my repairs/upgrades on my house are (almost) done for the time being, and I'll have a break in company for a few weeks.

Bottom line, I should have a little more time to put into the site... and more time to watch TV. I'm still not sure how I got through Full Metal Panic with all that going on, but I'm glad I did. BTW, Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu! Volume 2 released yesterday. Feel free to purchase it in our Shop and look for full reviews soon.

We did OK on visitors in June. We had a slight dip in visits from May, but those that did come read more pages. I find that encouraging. This month the numbers are up again despite the lack of updates. We're not dead yet... in fact, we feel much better.

Stay tuned.

I started working my way through my DVR again last night and polished off some Teen Titans episodes.

One was a mixed bag, two were great.

First the mixed bag. Mother Mae-eye was a freaky little show very much in the Mad Mod vein. The story was about a Hansel and Gretel-esque witch who takes over the heros of Titans Tower, controlling their minds by feeding them pie and dressing them in silly outfits. It felt too much like a bad trip, and although there were a few funny parts, it just was not my cup 'o tea.

In The End Part 1 we continue the story set forth in episode Birthmark. The dark heroine Raven has a dark destiny to fulfill. She is marked to bring about the end of the world by acting as a portal for her father, Trigon, to enter and take over the Earth. It's episodes like this where Teen Titans excels.

When she realizes the day for the end of the world has come, Raven breaks out of her moody, goth-girl mold to try and bring happiness to her friends on their last day on the planet. It's interesting to see her change for the love of her friends, and do her best to insulate them from the inevitable. Robin and the others have a plan, however. Once they realize that the End has come, they show Raven to a safehouse within Titans Tower that should keep her safe from her father's approach.

Trigon has other ideas. He sends the reborn Slade and an army of minions to descend on the Teen Titans and capture Raven. Slade and the army threaten to overrun the Titans, and Raven is forced to give herself up to save her friends. Despite their best efforts to stop the process, Raven is sacrificed and Trigon enters the world.

The End Part 2 continues the story. The Titans awake to a dead world. Raven saved them with a spell before Trigon arrived, but now there is little hope to save the planet. A frontal assault on Trigon proves useless, and the team is almost without hope.

And then hope comes from an unlikely place, Slade. The Titans former archenemy offers them a deal. He will help them save Raven and the world, if he gets to tag along. With little choice but to accept, Robin follows him down into the Abyss, leaving Starfire, Beast Boy and Cyborg to distract Trigon in any way they can. Secrets are revealed in the underworld, including how Slade survived his battle with Tara and where Robin might find Raven.

The end of The End Part 2 leaves us waiting impatiently for The End Part 3. It airs this Saturday 7/16 on Cartoon Network at 8:00 PM following an Encore presentation of Part 2 at 7:30 PM. Even if you did not have the chance to see Part 1, I would suggest watching Parts 2 and 3 together in a nice hour-long session. The End is an outstanding set of episodes and I can't wait to see how it ... ends.

Holy cripes!

This past week at Anime Expo, AD Vision announced that they have acquired the full rights to the U.S. distribution of the original Macross TV series from Harmony Gold. Although they have had a joint venture with Harmony Gold on the Robotech releases, it appears that ADV now has full clearance to produce brand new English dub for Macross.

Looks like I have a quintuple dip in my future on this show. A modern dub would be wonderful for this series. I can't wait to see who they tag for the VA's on this. Chris Patton as Hikaru perhaps? I could see it.

More news as it comes available.
